NetworkManager
I was having a play with PPTP support for NetworkManager tonight. I got hold of an Ubuntu package for it and dropped it in. At this point, NetworkManager gained an option to configure my VPNs, so I added one for UWA's VPN. So far, so good. Unfortunately, I could not find a single option from anywhere in the UI to then connect to this VPN. I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong, but it's distressing, because we're so close to the shrink wrapped solution for making this desktop product really quite viable for people like University students.

Incidentally, this man is a hero of the project. Look at him being a hero. See how he talks heroically into the microphone.

Vincent Untz

He's either the hero of the project, or a future Bat villain (obviously someone will have to throw acid in his face, or throw him out a window, or something equally as far fetched to turn him criminally insane). Obviously, in this case he will need a suitable villain name, like... Le Frog (Bomb Voyage was already taken). He will also need a lycra jumpsuit. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing him in the next Batman film.

I had exactly the same issue until I restarted my laptop (or maybe just restarting Gnome would do it) and then it just "appeared"

Right vs left click and Dapper package

I had huge trouble with this - I knew to run nm-vpn-properties, which only helps technically minded users of course; only later did I find out, after a restart, that you can left click the applet and achieve something! Having a panel applet do different things on different clicks seems rather counter intuitive.

To get it going on Dapper, you will need to recompile the package against Dapper's pppd - by default it's compiled for 2.4.3, and the package you found wasn't updated. I built a new one (http://hoiho.wlug.org.nz/~crb/nm/) which you're welcome to try.

In the end, I made it attempt to connect, but pptp didn't like the options it was presented. I intend to get some bug reporting going eventually, but unfortunately it's still a way off "just works".

It fails at the pppd part.

I've just committed the latest version of my PPTP plugin.
(Which is now actually a much more general PPPd plugin)
Though currently it's only configured function is PPTP.

Anyhow it's much improved and has some real configuration
dialogs etc. I'd love it if you could give it a try. I
asked Craig (posted above) to build a new Ubuntu package
of it too.

ps. That ain't a photo of me! :-D
