After my post yesterday, several people asked if the feature could be implemented in gucharmap. It's now bug #509075.

It's a little bit slow if you have a lot of fonts, but it looks like this:

I never knew how handy this would be until I saw the screenshot. Another cool improvement would be a 'preview' button in the toolbar (next to fontsize) that would launch Gnome Font Viewer. To make it rock even more, add this to the File menu:

Go to fonts folder

and

Install New Font

Installing fonts under Gnome is a black art for new users. Prompt "For current user only/For Everybody" and then copy fonts and update the font cache.

Drag and drop into fonts:// is meant to work for local installation. Combined with Policykit, it should be possible to implement a "For all users" type option.

Would it be possible, if there is text in "Text to copy", to preview that instead? That way it would be possible to preview more than character without extra GUI and still intiutive.

I think it would be more useful to add that sort of functionality to gnome-specimen instead, which I feel could make a very nice complement to the character map/fontilus.
