there has been some angst regarding dress codes
For those angsting about Saturday and what Steph has dictated you can and cannot wear, maybe this will clear some things up.

Black pants/jacket (e.g. a suit) are perfectly fine. But don't wear all black (e.g. suit and shirt), it's bad form (plus you'll look like a member of the wait staff).

White is right out. It's bad luck.

Red is out too. Stephanie will be wearing red, so you should not.

I apologise if this seriously reduces your wardrobe choices, but perhaps you can think of any required expansions as a positive contribution.

Hats and hairpieces are actively encouraged. Not enough people wear hats to weddings in Australia.

2 days, 20 hours, 43 minutes.

Dude, we get it. You're getting married. You're not the first person in the world who's ever got married. Please shut up about getting married already!

Wait, what, people can have blogs syndicated outside Planet GNOME?

I know! Who would've believed that I might use this as a medium for mass communication?

Wow. How unreasonable. I mean talking about his upcoming wedding on his own blog. The horror. The self-obsession. It's like it's a big deal to him or something. Maybe Davyd even (whisper it now) cares!

Good thing we have people like you to point out the finer points of social etiquette though. Especially anonymously. I'm sure that you were just going for brevity rather than being a gutless jerk with nothing better to do than slag people off for daring to talk on their own blog about huge events in their lives.

Just to clarify, I was the (anonymous) who posted "planet.ginger.org" the other day but I am not the (anonymous) who posted the above comment. I think he has a point, but didn't put it very well. In fact his comment reminds me of this: http://edward.oconnor.cx/2005/04/rms .

Congratulations on getting married. I was following the Perth weather at the time with my GNOME weather applet.

Anyway the problem is that people want a good way of keeping up to date with GNOME development. Unfortunately S/N on planet.gnome.org is too low, GNOME Journal is updated too infrequently (but actually it addresses a difference audience), the mailing lists are just flame wars and shed painting (also the interesting people have probably unsubscribed), web forums are just well... full of newbies, it's too painful to track SVN commits (information overload), no-one really bothers to update the wiki, etc, etc.

So there is frustration. I don't think blocking bozos with CSS is the right solution, unless the bozo is Rich Burridge. If someone blocked you for example they would lose your GtkStyle post.

There are probably two quite separate audiences for this blog. GNOMErs maybe aren't interested in their rockstars getting married, and if your mum reads this blog she probably isn't interested in GNOME, apart from that her boy is clever and working hard. Perhaps you could split it into two blogs, one on blogs.gnome.org. Or it might be possible in LJ to tag the GNOME posts and export an RSS feed of posts which have that tag.

Anyway you can do something to improve the situation a little. But GNOME still has a big communication problem.

Where this falls down is the assumption that technical people are only interested in technical topics. The people on Planet GNOME are my friends, I *want* to read about their lives. I want to know what exciting places they've been, and what they thought of them. I want to know about their children and their favourite pieces of music.

There seems to be a common misunderstanding that p.g.o is a source of technical information about the project. Whereas as printed at the top of the page itself: "Planet GNOME is a window into the world, work and lives of GNOME hackers and contributors". Or in other words, Planet GNOME's signal to noise ratio cannot be measured, it is all signal.

This isn't a communication problem, this is a demonstration that GNOME is more than just software; GNOME is in fact people.

I'd like to raise the issue of beige. Not actually white, but there are plenty who aren't bothered to know there's a difference.

Also, I think this is less of an issue, but the shirt I was planning to wear is of a plaidish pattern with an element of red. Overall not very red, but still a small amount. I assume this would be ok, yes?

I've been looking for an excuse to by a kimono for a long time - and this has finally given me one. For a while I was all "Sarongs rock"; then it was "A Kilt, my Kingdon for a kilt" - but now I've bought a kimono.

Now the only concern is the Japanese Chinese clash (Aesthetically if nothing else)

Hmmm - Probably going to wimp out and wear light brown trousers and green shirt

Oh the angst!

Thanks for the clarification!

Just be aware that neither of you will have the right to complain if I wear one of the bright ties Dad's given me over the years. -_^
