this is no polar expedition
Having looked at the travel journal of some friends who left for their trip on the same night as us, their photos seem both more interesting and of higher quality and they're actually managing to update frequently. On top of this the prose is excellent and insightful.

So in an attempt to make amends, here are some more photos from our trip...

view of Penang, towards the south-east, from Penang Hill

Pagoda at Kek Lok Si
the most beautiful of my wives

Boeing 777 (included for the enjoyment of Capt. and Ltnt. Excitement)

Clarke Quay at on Friday night

Suntec City and the Singapore Flyer

Sentosa Merlion

I need to think about how to upload all of our photos... I took about 4GB worth... perhaps I'll simply ditch the full-quality versions. I'm also going to need a bigger hard drive.

gallery isn't too bad these days. googlebot doesn't destroy the database. I think if you can get it to put 9 pictures per page and get comments more prominent it would be very nice.

The problem is not software, the problem is storage.

I'm thinking if I ditch the highest quality from the web server, it should be ok.

We still have 200 GB on the array with /home...

At full resolution there are 1.5G from Dad and 3.8G from Amanda from the wedding and 5.0G from our trip.

It seems a bit excessive usage-wise for photos people are only going to look at briefly.

Space is cheap, we just need to make an easy way to exclude stuff from backups (you'd be mad to trust only UCC's anyway). Can't be that hard...

Perhaps a .nobackup file in a directory you wish to ignore? We could build an exclude list for tar on the fly using find and xargs?

The thing is, no one needs to look at 12MP images anyway.

I'll trade you four head of cattle and a sheep for one of your wives.

I'd love to, but I'm still using them.

You could use the sheep instead.

May I ask, if Steph is the most beautifu of your wives, what do your other wives look like? :)

Welcome back! Glad you're home! :)

Paradoxically, she is also the least beautiful of my wives.

I am astonished that Steph hasn't responded with a picture of me.

What's the big deal about the merlion? I don't recall it being particularly impressive (8 years ago when I saw it) but it seems to be everywhere. Perhaps it's like the Pinnacles or Wave Rock?

There are just the few big statues AFAIK. I guess it's just iconic.

Apparently (as a tour guide told us) the lion is because of people who first came here and thought they saw a lion (although there are no lions in that part of the world) and because Singapore used to be a fishing village, they combined the animals into the Merlion.
