stroke my ego
Knew Steph wouldn't be home late until tonight, and chances to do this on a whim are going to run out, so I decided to wander around the UWA campus after work with a tripod and my camera. Most of the photos I took were lemons, but there were a couple that came good. My fragile ego wants to know what people think. Constructive criticism also gratefully accepted.

My 40 ringgit tripod behaves pretty much how you'd expect: poorly. It's very, very shaky. Many of the photos took several attempts. Some that I thought would work really well, like the library, didn't turn out at all. I hadn't originally intended to walk up to the reflection pond, but sat on the pavement I think I got some really nice shots.

On the technical front; I upgraded my laptop to the new Ubuntu today using their upgrade app and everything. Things actually went perfectly. Upon rebooting and seeing X start I thought about how far we've come (and how I still have such low expectations). Everything seems much less broken than the betas I tried when writing the GNOME release notes. Ubuntu's non-free driver applet seems to need 10MB of writable memory for something though... that seems strange.

Finally, football at night makes for interesting photography. I got quite a few good shots, but I think this was my favourite:

I think that the colour balance is nice. I'm not so sure about the framing of the first two. The clock tower is my favourite. Are you still uploading photos to steph's flickr page?

I should have gotten further away. From the back though it's hard, there are a lot of trees in the way of the view.

I wanted to try something a little bit different, so I shot from very low on the ground (almost lying down) looking up to make the buildings seem more impressive.

I like how the bust casts a hard shadow back onto the building. That was almost so awesome you'd think it was set up.

Incidentally, the lights in the Old Senate Room in the background of your football shot are me having a meeting until eight fucking o'clock.

I walked past at 8'o'clock just as people were leaving. We probably just missed each other by mere seconds.

I agree that the clocktower shot is really nice. In the reflection pond photo I keep finding myself wanting to see more off the top of the frame; I wonder if a portrait orientation with more building in the picture would have worked better. Normally I hate sodium vapour lighting but I think it has turned out fine here.

As for the shaky tripod with long exposures problem: you did use the timer, right? :P

I did use the timer, but even the slightest breeze will set the thing shaking.

No doubt the clock tower one is nice but I also like the "and the front, overlooking the reflection pond" one as well.

Consider your ego stroked. ^_^

I like the picture of the pool of reflection doing it's thing. One of the artists I watch on deviantart takes similair shots and then rotates them 180 - it is strange how much it changes your perception to have a "solid" reflection of a wavy reality. It's cute.

But still - your ego should be nice and healthy because these are good looking photos

I've seen similar shots and let it inspire some framing. I haven't looked at my shots upside down though.

I don't know jack about photography, but the reflection pond and the clocktower shots are very pretty imho. :-)
